Key Questions

Who will be at REAL Community?
Real Community will bring together 50 rising 10th-12th graders from throughout Greater Cincinnati area schools for an intensive three day retreat at Camp Joy. Student participants will be supported by a team of volunteer staff from Youth At The Center and Camp Joy staff.

What happens at REAL Community?
Students will have the opportunity  to better understand themselves, understand others, and learn key strategies to be a positive influence in their schools and neighborhoods through the activities at REAL Community. Participants will have the opportunity to participate in and learn from activities that explore stereotyping, prejudice, communication, racism, and sexism. We also like to have fun doing serious things, so there will be a campfire, dance, and outdoor activities during our time as well.

How much does it cost?
The cost for REAL Community is $150. Financial Aid is available to cover the cost to help make it accessible for all young people. The cost includes all meals and lodging at Camp Joy. Additionally, transportation will be provided to Camp Joy from Cincinnati for all participants as well as a t-shirt and materials.

Why should I sign up?
REAL Community equips young people with the skills to raise their voice, be heard by peers and adults, and create change in their schools and neighborhoods. Student participants of REAL Community will help plan Young, Not Silent, the region's annual youth leadership conference attended by 400 young people. Young, Not Silent takes its name from challenging the old saying that "young people should be seen and not heard". At REAL Community, participants will be seen, heard, and valued as the next generation of leaders. Sign up today!
